Mastronardi Produce Expands with Sixth USA Greenhouse

Kingsville, Ontario and Wapakoneta, Ohio (July 6, 2018) North America’s leading grower and distributor of specialty and commodity greenhouse produce announced that it has expanded with its sixth greenhouse in the USA, a 20-acre state-of-the-art facility in Wapakoneta, Ohio. The farm will operate as The Ohio Greenhouse Company, and uses the latest innovative technology to provide fresh, local produce to the area year-round.

The Ohio Greenhouse Company will focus on offering flavorful, non-GMO produce under the SUNSET® brand, and will be locally available at top retailers for Ohio and surrounding states including Michigan, Pennsylvania, New York, Indiana, Illinois, Kentucky and West Virginia.

SUNSET® Continues to Wow, Winning an Innovation Award at the United Fresh Tradeshow

(Chicago, IL, June 27, 2018) SUNSET® continues to be a leader in produce innovation, winning an Innovation Award at the United Fresh Tradeshow in Chicago.

Up against eight finalists in the category, the Aloha™ pepper brought home the award for Best New Vegetable Product. All Innovation Award finalists were displayed at the Innovation Showcases at the United Fresh Tradeshow and voted on by attendees over the course of the two-day show.

SUNSET® Takes Home Seven Awards at the 11th Annual Leamington Greenhouse Competition

Kingsville, ON (June 18, 2018) SUNSET® earned seven awards at the 11th annual Leamington Greenhouse Competition, making it the most awarded contestant of the two-day competition.

Along with winning the Overall Best Tomato and Overall Best Pepper, SUNSET took top honors in five other categories, including: Cluster Tomato, Cocktail Tomato, Bite-Size Tomato, Specialty Bell Pepper and Specialty Hot Pepper. In addition, SUNSET dominated the Bite-Size Tomato category, placing in all three spots with Flavor Bombs® ranking first.

“We are honored to receive numerous awards for our premium produce at this year’s Greenhouse Competition,” said CEO Paul Mastronardi. “Winning all three spots in the Bite-Size category, along with winning Best Overall Tomato and Best Overall Pepper is a true testament to the strength of the SUNSET brand and its commitment to innovation and flavor.”

Products are entered in to a double-blind taste test which are first judged by a panel of experts, including representatives from the Ontario Ministry of Agriculture & Rural Affairs, chefs, and produce managers. All entries are then judged by the public, who cast over 1000 votes this year.

“What I love most about this competition is that products are judged purely on their flavor. Flavor is our top priority at SUNSET so receiving the most awards at this year’s competition is a great compliment to our hardworking team,” said CEO Paul Mastronardi.

The annual greenhouse competition is hosted by R.E.A.C.H. International, a locally funded charitable organization, with proceeds going toward the funding of schools and clinics in Uganda.

Roger Mooking Serves Up 21 New Flavorful SUNSET® Recipes


Kingsville, ON (May 16, 2018) SUNSET® is pleased to introduce 21 new flavorful recipes developed by Celebrity Chef Roger Mooking. This totals nearly 100 unique recipes that Mooking has created showcasing fresh SUNSET produce since his partnership with the company in 2015.

Chef Mooking, who was announced as SUNSET’s Culinary Director last year, took his recipe development in a different direction for his latest recipes. He’s focused on simple, yet delicious dishes that home cooks with limited time and/or kitchen experience can prepare in minutes.

“We created a series of easy to prepare recipes using SUNSET branded produce that literally anyone can master at home, even kids,” explained Mooking. “We wanted to show consumers that cooking with fresh produce is an easy way to add flavor and nutrition to your plate.” Among the 21 new recipes, consumers can find inspiration (or meals) ranging from Sweet Bell Pepper Scrambled Eggs to Roasted Whole Turkey with Minzano® Tomato Bread Stuffing as well as kid-friendly snacks for healthy eating on-the-go. Nearly all the recipes can be completed in 30 minutes or less and use ingredients that can be found at any supermarket or independent grocer.
