Trailblazing Partnership Brings Local Produce to Appalachia

SUNSET & AppHarvest Logos

Kingsville, Ontario, and Morehead, Kentucky (May 21, 2019) Produce industry leader Mastronardi Produce and AppHarvest have announced construction of a high-tech greenhouse in Morehead, Kentucky, which will bring an infusion of jobs and award-winning produce to the Appalachian states.

“The 60-acre [2.6 million plus square feet], state-of the-art facility will be one of the most sustainable, efficient, and technologically advanced greenhouses of its kind,” says Paul Mastronardi, President and CEO, and the fourth-generation family member to lead Mastronardi Produce. “This is a significant milestone for Kentucky’s farming and food sectors.”

The new build represents Phase One of AppHarvest Founder and CEO Jonathan Webb’s vision to stoke the region’s economy, which took a major hit with the decline of coal.  It will create year-round access to locally-grown SUNSET® tomatoes and cucumbers, and it will be the largest high-tech cucumber greenhouse in the US.

Both Mastronardi and AppHarvest share a strong commitment to developing communities, and the Morehead location was chosen with careful intention.

“Situated in the heart of America, the facility is within one day’s drive of 70% of the US population in a region known for its hard work, ingenuity, and tenacity,” says Webb. “This greenhouse will be a source of opportunity, optimism, and prosperity for the entire Appalachian region.”

“We believe everyone should be able to buy fresh vegetables,” says Mastronardi. “Thanks to this partnership, consumers in Kentucky and surrounding states—Ohio, Tennessee, Virginia, and West Virginia, to name a few—can look forward to flavorful SUNSET® produce arriving at stores within hours of being hand-picked. And increasing availability of local produce will continue to be a priority for us.”

SUNSET® Marks Sweet Win at CPMA

Organic Angel Sweet

(Montreal, QC, April 2, 2019) SUNSET® Organic Angel Sweet® has won the Best Organic Product Award at the Canadian Produce Marketing Association Convention and Tradeshow in Montreal, Canada.

Showcased in SUNSET’s new backyard-compostable packaging, Organic Angel Sweet® was one of 53 products to compete in the New Product Showcase, which was judged by a panel of industry leaders.

“There has been tremendous customer and retailer response since we launched Organic Angel Sweet in 2018, and we’re honored to receive this recognition from our peers,” says Paul Mastronardi, President and CEO, and the fourth-generation family member to lead Mastronardi Produce.

Greenhouse-grown and born from the world’s sweetest grape tomatoes, Organic Angel Sweet delivers the same exceptional flavor that consumers expect of SUNSET snacking tomatoes. And like all SUNSET products, they are Non-GMO Project Verified.

“SUNSET continues to be the leading driver of growth in the snacking category, and this new offering generates excitement within the growing organic segment,” says Nicole Balderas, Vice President, Marketing.

This award follows in the footsteps of the product’s conventional counterpart, which has received numerous accolades, including the prestigious Superior Taste Award from the International Taste and Quality Institute.

“We recognize consumers are concerned about their impact on the planet,” said Nicole Balderas, Vice President, Marketing, for Mastronardi Produce.  “We also know that this is a multi-faceted issue, so our goal is to provide a range of packaging solutions to empower consumers and retailers to address it.”

Balderas points out the rising concern over single-use plastic as an example saying, “We know consumers want alternatives to single-use plastic, and we are committed to offering alternatives, so they can make choices they feel good about.”

Mastronardi will showcase its latest sustainable packaging options, including SUNSET® options that are made from renewable sources and are 100% backyard compostable, at this year’s Canadian Produce Marketing Association’s Convention & Tradeshow in Montreal, Quebec.

The SPC is a trademark project of GreenBlue Org. Greenblue is a Charlottesville, VA-based environmental nonprofit dedicated to the sustainable use of materials in society.
