SUNSET’s Coldwater Greenhouse Opens Phase II

Kingsville, ON (August 26, 2014) Greenhouse growers SUNSET® Produce have recently completed Phase II construction of their greenhouse Coldwater Farms, doubling the operation to 60 acres.

Open since 2012, the facility grows SUNSET® tomatoes on the vine and grape tomatoes 365 days a year. This state of the art greenhouse uses advanced technology including energy curtains and grow lights to provide fresh flavor all year round, even when there’s snow on the ground. SUNSET-Coldwater1

“The ability to grow fresh tomatoes in the middle of winter is something we are very proud of,” stated CEO Paul Mastronardi. “The location of Coldwater means we can pick, pack and ship the freshest possible tomatoes in the same day. This means we continue to deliver the highest flavor possible while also reducing food miles.”

SUNSET® recently planted tomatoes on the vine, beefsteak and Angel Sweet® plants, with the first harvest expected to be in 7 weeks. The new addition features a diffused glass ceiling, which evenly distributes sunlight throughout the greenhouse to contribute to better plant quality.

Like Phase I, Phase II includes automated harvest carts for efficient and ergonomic harvesting, the use of recycled water and fertilizer, and a rainwater irrigation system. With the new addition, Coldwater Farms will soon become a Michigan Agriculture Environmental Assurance Program-verified farm in recognition of SUNSET’s environmental initiatives.

Coldwater’s strategic location contributes to SUNSET®’s The Green Grass Project® by decreasing the amount of food miles and delivering fresh and flavorful product to the Midwest all year round. Consumers can look for Michigan grown tomatoes at retailers across the Midwest.

Canadian Greenhouse Takes Flavor on the Road

Kingsville, ON (August 5, 2014) – SUNSET® Produce is taking their signature flavor on the road this week, embarking on a three month food truck tour. As the company that introduced Campari® brand cocktail tomatoes, SUNSET® plans on introducing even more flavors and recipes to consumers from Boston to California.

“Our goal with this tour is to get more face time with consumers and foodies who already love signature flavors like Campari®, or who haven’t even heard of us before. We want to bring them the same flavor experience we live for everyday,” said CEO Paul Mastronardi.

The SUNSET® Flavor Tour is the first ever nationwide expedition for the company. Their Flavormobile, which is fully branded to feature popular tomato brands such as Campari®, Kumato® and Zima®, will be stopping at a number of retailers, concerts, and community events across America.

“This is our opportunity to tell the greenhouse story, tell the SUNSET® story, and talk everything flavor,” continued Mastronardi. “A lot of people are curious about brands like Kumato®, our brown tomato, or Zima®, our bright orange snacking tomato and we want to open the conversation on flavor and healthy eating.”

Not only will consumers be sampling great recipes, they’ll also have a chance to enter the SUNSET® SweetStakes. The grand prize? A personalized flavor trip for 2 to beautiful Napa Valley. The winners will be going on wine tours, taking cooking classes, and enjoying the beautiful sights of the area.

“Our Flavor Following is all about food. We connect with bloggers, chefs and moms and dads who care about what they’re putting on their families’ plates. We want to expand that circle and show everyone that healthy eating isn’t complicated, and it doesn’t mean compromising flavor.”

Kumato® is a registered trademark of a Syngenta Group Company.
